Anglers often proudly share pictures of their personal best catch of a species, or ‘PB’ as the Social Media slang has it. However, here is my ‘PW’ – personal worst. The smallest pollack I have ever seen, took a liking to my white mackerel feathers. I’m never sure if catching small fish is a bad sign, or and indicator of good fishing in years to come. This tiny individual fell short of four inches.

A few mackerel taken in the same way completed my tally for the day. Another crew member caught a pouting – an uncommon catch afloat I find. I even persuaded my other half to hold a rod for a while. She reeled in a small grey gurnard – her first ever fish.
Total Catch:
- 3 Mackerel
- 1 Pollack
