Perhaps I should call them ‘pollack feathers’ rather than ‘mackerel feathers’? They certainly work against this member of the cod family. I boated five before we moved on out of Milford Haven in the open ocean, to the islands of Skokholm and Skomer.

Using the same method, I catch a grey gurnard, some greater sandeels and a couple of coalfish. I’ve always understood that these were more of a cold water fish; I’ve not caught them later than June before.

Its time we took a bass or two. I set up my spinning rod with a Rapala lure, and set it trolling behind the boat. We passed nail-bitingly close to and underwater mount. That’s where the fish are. Each pass gave a nice bass (48cm and 45cm)

Total Catch:
- 6 Pollack
- 2 Greater Sandeel
- 1 Grey Gurnard
- 2 Coalfish
- 2 Bass
